Water changes itself can help get rid of all the organic waste such as faeces and left over food. It doesn't matter how often or much of the water in the aquarium you sipped out during water changes.

Water changes will help to replenish the oxygen level for your Flower Horn. Need not to mention, you will be more than satisfy and happy to see your tank water crystal clear and you can see your Flower Horn roaming freely and clearly.

It is equally important too to determine the water quality supplied to your home. However, there could be some other factors you should take into consideration.

     [ External Factors ]

Monsoon season: Certain areas in Malaysia have experienced situation where their tap water changes color. Dry season is known to cause this type of problem, however, the water will appear muddy. Too much of chlorine or carbonate added into tap water will make the water look whitish.

Geographical location: High rise residents repeatedly complaining of smelly and dirty water from their storage tank on top of the building. Thorough inspection will sometimes lead to unbelievable habitants in the tank.

Nature: Exposing your aquarium to direct sunlight will cause your water to look greenish as sunlight will promotes more active algae growth in your aquarium.

Possible Solution: Try installing additional filtration device before the main water inlet. Avoid placing your aquarium at a place where it will be exposed to any direct sunlight.

[ Internal Factors ]

The internal factors which could have cause your water to be smelly or whitish could have been caused by the following:

1. Type of food fed to your Flower Horn
2. Type of water filters used
3. The volume of the water in the tank
4. The condition of the sponge inside the filter

Flower Horn is a very choosy when it come to the food topic. They know what we are feeding them with. If they doesn't like the food in the beginning, chances are they are not not going to like it forever.

While most Flower Horn hobbyists have their own method / self-prepared food, almost none of them will not say beef heart will shorten Flower Horn life span. Logically, it does make some sense since it contains high level of cholesterol and it could be fatal to we human too if consumed too often. In other way, it will dirty up your water faster than if you feed your Flower Horn with dry pallets. We do hear story about fish breeders feed them with live earth worm, which is fish favorite food. No matter what type of food you feed your Flower Horn with, think logically and be more reasonable. Keep this in mind, do not try to save on fish food.

While most will go for Air Pump, Sponge Filter because of its price, we would suggest that you use Power Filter. However, each filter will have its own advantage. Sponge Filter is good for nitrifying bacteria but it does not provide a good filtration. Power Filter provides a good filtration but then, the nitrifying bacteria cannot grow in the sponge as it was located on top of your aquarium.

If you house an adult fish in a 5 foot tank, then the water volume is huge and will not turn rotten so easily. However, if you house 2 Flower Horn fish in a smaller tank separated by a piece of glass, it is recommended that you change the tank water once daily. Again, remember to remove all the left over food after feeding your Flower Horn.

Remember to clean or replace your sponge inside the box on top of your tank if it clogged up the filtering device. AVOID changing it unnessarily.

We do not warrant its correctness or its fitness for use.
The risk of using it remains entirely with the user.
