When fully grown and matured, the traditional Flower Horn could weigh more than two kilos. It can grow up to twenty inches in length, eight inches in height. The caudal, anal and dorsal fin of a high quality species will even give an impression of a flying flag when Flower Horn is swimming.

Flower Horn came into existence some few years back. Then the pearl typed Flower Horn gradually emerges few years later. The birth of this pearl-typed Flower Horn marked the coming of the second generation of the new breed of Flower Horn into the market.

In the early day when Flower Horn was first conceived, there wasn't much choice for the hobbyist. Enthusiasts would choose their Flower Horn mainly based on the black markings on their body. Evident proves that these black markings will display special characters ranging to numbers to Arabic wording. A fish with the Arabic word "May you be in good health" (Salam sejahtera ke atas kamu) was sold for RM 50,000 (US $13,158) to a buyer.

During those early days, most of the Flower Horn do not have a big lump on the forehead either. Unlike now, hobbyist could choose a Flower Horn based on mainly body features such as the forehead, markings, colors and the body shape. Some will even choose a Flower Horn with all the characteristics. However, the person must be willing to pay more for the price of the Flower Horn.

[ The Traditional Flower Horn ]

Is very impressive and gigantic in size, but lacking colors The prevalence color on their body is rather limited; only grey and light bluish with some red patches. As for the markings of the body, like it's counterpart, some specimen have a full marking. Most with less than full markings. So the marking is not a main criteria in distinguishing between the traditional and Pearl-typed Flower Horn.

However, the obvious distinguished markings are the two blots on the side of the forehead. The pearl-typed have those obvious blots. As for the other clear distinguished features - it would be the forehead of the Flower Horn. The traditional type have a more bigger than the pearl typed. The eyes of the traditional Flower horn are more inward and their colors either white, yellow or light blue, but nowadays they are all mostly red. The lips of the Flower horn are very petite and resemble those of the monkey.

[ The Modern Flower Horn ]

The Pearl typed Flower Horn, in general, has a smaller, thinner body. The largest size is only about 18 inches in length (very rare). Their forehead is also smaller than the the older counterpart. Their eyes are mostly red and their lips are a bit more thicker.

With Pearl type Flower Horn, their caudal, dorsal, anal fin do not grow in proportionally with their body. Normally, they appear smaller than the body in comparison. Of course, there are some exceptions that have a nice balanced body shape and fins. And as far as the color is concerned, the pearl typed Flower Horn is more colorful. Red is most commonly found on the fish body but we expect to see other other colors as well. The sparkling pearls, which is where the name came from, are why pearl types become such a popular hit today.

  • The pearl typed Flower Horn (Right) has no obvious black mark on the side of the forehead whereas the traditional type Flower Horn (Left) do not have one.
  • The lips of the Pearl typed Flower Horn is more thicker while the traditional type is more smooth.
